Managing your Dining Plan is all about balance—literally. Here’s everything you need to know about budgeting your Dining Dollars and Triton Cash so you can stay fueled and financially smart all year long.
Dining Plans 101: How to Get the Most from Your UC San Diego Dining Plan
Budgeting for Each Quarter (and the Year)
When you receive your Dining Dollars and Triton Cash at the start of the year, it’s all there—ready for you to use. But that also means it’s up to you to make it last through Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Each quarter has a different number of days, so your spending pace should change slightly with each one.
| Quarter | Approx. Days | % of Year | Suggested Spending % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fall | 82 days | ~35% | ~35% of your funds |
| Winter | 77 days | ~33% | ~33% of your funds |
| Spring | 77 days | ~32% | ~32% of your funds |
| Total: 236 days | |||
Budgeting Tips
Start Strong, Not Fast. Fall Quarter is the longest, so it makes sense that you may spend a little more—but pace yourself to avoid running low by Winter.
Do a Monthly Check-In. Use the Transact eAccounts Portal to track your spending. Consider dividing your total Dining Dollars by 10 months and sticking to that monthly average.
Save Some Triton Cash for Breaks.
Staying on campus for Winter or Spring Break? Some Dining locations are closed or have limited hours during breaks and holidays.
Triton Cash can be used at vending machines, markets, and select locations on and off campus, so save a little to keep your spending options open.
Know the Rules.
Dining Dollars expire at the end of Fall Quarter next year if you don’t sign up for a new plan.
Triton Cash stays active as long as you're an enrolled student.
Goal! Finish Spring Quarter with just a few dollars left—not a surprise shortfall or lots of unused funds!
Pro Tips for Smart Spending
- Review your transaction history often.
- Take advantage of dining specials and bundled meal deals.
- Meal prep with market items to stretch your budget.
Early Termination and Uncontracted Dining Plan Dollars and Triton Cash: What It Is and How It's Charged
Your Dining Plan is provided in full at move-in; however, your Housing and Dining bill can be paid monthly, quarterly, or in a lump sum. This means you may be using Dining Plan Dollars and/or Triton Cash before you have fully paid for them. This only becomes an issue if you end your Housing and Dining contract early, as you would then owe money for any Dining Plan Dollars and/or Triton Cash spent but not yet paid for.
We calculate a daily allowance (called a per diem) by dividing your total Dining Dollars or Triton Cash by the number of days in the year.
If you leave early, we check if your spending exceeded what it should be based on the days you lived on campus.
For example:
David starts the year by treating all his roommates to dinner every night, spending a lot of extra Dining Dollars that aren't in his budget. He decides to transfer to a different school after a few weeks and ends his Housing contract before the end of the quarter. However, he has already spent half of his Dining Dollars for the entire school year. David is responsible for repaying the Dining Dollars he spent past his quarterly allowance.
If you’ve spent more than your per diem allows, the difference will be charged to your account.

TRITON $5,100 DINING PLAN for a 236-day academic year
$4,600 in Dining
Dollars $500 in Triton Cash
STEP 1: Calculate Daily Rates
Dining Dollars daily rate = $4,600 ÷ 236 days = $19.49/day
Triton Cash daily rate = $500 ÷ 236 days = $2.12/day
STEP 2: Prorate Based on Move-Out
If you're approved to move out 60 days early, you will be billed for a total of 176 days.
Dining Dollars prorated allocation = 176 × $19.49 = $3,430.24
Triton Cash prorated allocation = 176 × $2.12 = $373.12
STEP 3: Compare to Actual Usage
At the time of move-out:
You spent $3,700 in Dining Dollars → Overused by $269.76
You spent $425 in Triton Cash → Overused by $51.88
Total Overuse Charges:
Dining Dollars Overuse: $269.76
Triton Cash Overuse: $51.88
Total Potential Charges: $321.64

Why You Should Check Your Balances Regularly
Knowing where you stand helps you avoid surprises later. You can check balances anytime on the Transact eAccounts Portal or the app. Check your balances after a big purchase or as you approach the end of the quarter so you can adjust your spending.
What Happens to Unused Funds?
Dining Dollars: Stay active as long as you have a Dining Plan. If you don’t sign up again next year, unused dollars expire at the end of Fall Quarter.
Triton Cash: Rolls over year to year and stays active as long as you're enrolled at UC San Diego. Once you graduate or leave, the account closes.
