Frequently Asked Questions |
Just Walk Out
What if I do not have a mobile phone or the app?
Using the Triton2Go mobile app provides a seamless experience and allows you to use your Triton Cash or Dining Dollar accounts, in addition to a credit card. Visitors to campus have the option to use a credit card to enter the market. There is no cash option, as all UC San Diego Residential Dining locations are cashless.
How does Just Walk Out technology know when a product is taken and by whom?
Just Walk Out technology is made possible by artificial intelligence like computer vision and deep learning techniques, including generative AI, to accurately determine who took what in any retail environment. Amazon built synthetic datasets to mimic millions of realistic shopping scenarios—including variations in store format, lighting conditions, and even crowds of shoppers—to ensure accuracy in any environment. The technology detects what shoppers take from or return to the shelves and creates a virtual shopping session. When guests have completed their shopping experience, they are able to leave the store without having to wait in line, and their choice of payment method will be charged for the items they took with them.
Who do I contact if I am charged for items I did not take?
If you believe you were incorrectly charged for an item, you can submit a support request through the Triton2Go app or at support.ucsd.edu. Please include a copy of your receipt with the ticket to expedite resolution.
Where do I find my receipt?
For purchases made through the Triton2Go app:
You can view your receipts in the Triton2Go app by selecting Inbox → Receipts
For purchases made using credit/debit cards or tap-to-pay:
You can view your receipt through Just Walk Out Receipts using your card details. Please include the 17-digit receipt ID located at the bottom of the receipt.
What is tailgating and how do I avoid being charged for someone else's purchases?
When entering the gates at a JWO location, make sure no one follows you through the gate before closing behind you. Anyone who enters with you is part of your shopping party and the items they purchase will be included in your virtual shopping cart.
What if I can’t reach something on the shelf?
Please ask a market staff member to assist you. Do not ask another shopper to grab an item for you.
What other schools feature Just Walk Out technology?
Several higher education institutions across the country feature this technology; Cal State Long Beach is the closest university to UC San Diego. UC San Diego Health also utilizes the technology.
Is CalFresh available at these locations?
CalFresh is available at all JWO locations. Please notify a staff associate before entering the market gates that you would like to shop using CalFresh.
How much do I need in Dining Dollars or Triton Cash to enter the markets?
When generating a QR code in the Triton2Go app, the system will run a balance check to ensure that there is at least $20 in your account to enter the store. If your balance is getting low, or you want to avoid overspending your funds, please alert staff before entering the store; you may complete a shopping session and manually check out at the register.
What if I spend more than my account balance while in the store?
If you spend more funds than are available in your account while shopping. Your Dining Dollars or Triton Cash account will go into a negative balance, up to $50.

It will disappear within a few days, depending on your financial institution.
How much will my credit card be preauthorized for?
